Faith grows through personal struggles

“What's a struggle for me may not be a struggle for you.”

The khateeb, at 11:51

In one sentence

Faith is not a generic set of definitions but a personalized experiential journey in which Allah tests each person according to their circumstances, giving repeated opportunities to develop patience, taqwa, certainty, and an intimate relationship with Him.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Allah’s knowledge and justice mean accountability depends on each person’s access to guidance and capacity.
  2. Faith gains meaning through lived experience, with reward proportionate to struggle.
  3. Patience and taqwa emerge through real hardships, service, anger, and forgiveness rather than textbook definitions.
  4. Uncertainty around sleep, Ramadan’s special night, and Jumu’ah’s answered hour creates urgency and deeper reliance on Allah.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that faith grows through the way we live, not only through the definitions we learn. Allah knows each person's abilities, opportunities, and struggles, including the effort that others cannot see. Everyday experiences give us chances to practice patience, serve others, and control our anger. Ramadan and the special time for dua on Jumu'ah remind us to value our opportunities and turn to Allah with care and urgency. Even when life takes an unexpected turn, we can come to know Allah more deeply and ask Him to help us grow in humility and patience.

  1. What happened today that gave you a chance to practice patience?
  2. What is one effort someone else makes that we might overlook?
  3. What would you like to ask Allah for help with this week?
