Carry Ramadan practices into the year
“Let the passing of Ramadan include at least something new that we did not used to do.”
In one sentence
Ramadan is a glimpse of our best spiritual state, and true remorse is failing to carry its worship, gratitude, and character into the rest of the year.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reframes the post-Ramadan transition as normal and calls listeners to gratitude rather than sadness.
- Presents Ramadan as spiritual training whose benefits should continue beyond the month.
- Encourages carrying forward specific practices such as Quran, dua, dhikr, fasting, prayer, and charity.
- Extends Ramadan’s lessons into character through salam, smiling, generosity, and attentive listening.
- Emphasizes gradual habit-building rather than trying to reproduce Ramadan’s full intensity year-round.
- Connects these efforts to taqwa, sincere intention, acceptance of deeds, and prayers for suffering communities.
Try this week
Choose at least one Ramadan practice to continue throughout the year, such as Quran reading, dua, dhikr, or sunnah prayers.
Fast Mondays and Thursdays, the three white days, or highly rewarded days of Dhul-Hijjah.
Fulfill charity pledges and carry cash for regular sadaqah at the masjid.
Leave one or two minutes early to pray the two rak'ahs upon entering the masjid.
Continue greeting others with salam, smiling, and giving people full attention.
Set an alarm and keep trying to establish tahajjud, even if progress is gradual.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“The true loss and the true regret and the true thing that we should be remorseful for is if we do not carry forward anything with us from the month of Ramadan.”
“It doesn't mean we go back to doing everything, but, let the passing of Ramadan include at least something new that we did not used to do.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Ramadan gives us a glimpse of our best spiritual selves, so its end is not a reason for despair. We do not need to maintain Ramadan’s full intensity all year, but we should carry at least one good practice forward. That might be Quran reading, extra prayer, fasting, charity, greeting others warmly, or listening with full attention. Small deeds done consistently matter, and even sincere intentions are steps toward taqwa.
- What is one Ramadan habit you would like to keep this week?
- How can our family make someone feel better through salam, a smile, or better listening?
- What small act can we repeat until it becomes easier and more beloved?
Keep listening
