Rise with children, not control

“Maybe we need to stop raising our children and maybe we need to start rising with our children.”

The khateeb, at 10:45

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Open with the duty to love Allah and His Messenger and the link between chasing truth (al-Haqq) and pursuing justice (al-'Adl)
  2. Reject a minimalistic Islam limited to the five pillars; stress constant self-purification and moral evolution
  3. Critique the common 'general-with-soldiers' parenting style that crushes children through fear, beating, and labeling
  4. Trace how crushing children at home, school, and work produces societies that accept dictatorship and stagnation
  5. Present prophetic and companion examples, Musa, Maryam, Yahya, Yusuf, Zayd ibn Harithah, Anas, Hasan and Husayn, showing secure upbringings produce moral courage
  6. Close with a dua for parents to rise with their children and for mercy upon Muslims in Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, and Sudan
Try this week
Stop yelling, beating, name-calling, and labeling children
When a child questions something, explain the 'why' instead of demanding instant obedience
Apply Quranic teachings about honoring parents in your own conduct so children learn by example
Speak truth and stand against injustice in front of your children rather than silencing them
Use positive, truthful messaging about your children's identity and potential, following the Prophet's words to Hasan and Husayn
Sources the khateeb cited
Surah 87cited 'qad aflaha man tazaka wadhakara isma rabbihi fasalla' to argue that success requires ongoing self-purification and remembrance of Allah
Surah 91cited 'qad aflaha man zakaaha wa nafsin wa ma sawwaaha' to argue for constant refinement of the soul
Surah 28quoted Musa's sister saying 'hal adullukum ala man yakfuluhu' to show a secure upbringing under oppression produces boldness
Surah 19quoted 'ya Yahya khudhi al-kitaba biquwwah' to argue Zakariya did not crush Yahya's personality, enabling him to speak truth to a king
Surah 12quoted Yusuf preferring prison over sin to show how an uncushed upbringing preserves moral courage under pressure

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that loving Allah includes loving and pursuing the truth. When we sincerely seek truth, it should lead us toward justice and toward becoming better people. The khateeb encouraged parents not merely to control or “raise” children, but to grow and rise alongside them. Children should be guided with respect, so their natural sense of right and wrong is strengthened rather than crushed. The Prophet’s example shows that loving correction can happen without screaming, beating, or making a child feel hated.

  1. What is one truth you want to understand or practice better?
  2. How can our family rise and grow together this week?
  3. What helps you feel corrected with love instead of fear?
