Return to the Quran and qualified scholars

“When you surrender, you are called a Muslim.”

The khateeb, at 19:59

In one sentence

Muslims should return to the Qur'an, Prophetic guidance, simple tawhid, qualified scholarship, and awareness of their return to Allah to resist confusion and live with peace and responsibility.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Establishes the Qur'an as the truest speech and Muhammad's guidance as the best example.
  2. Clarifies that religious innovation concerns changes to worship and theology, not every new invention.
  3. Urges careful reading, hadith literacy, tafsir, and consulting qualified scholars.
  4. Presents tawhid as simple surrender to Allah and appeals to humanity's fitrah.
  5. Applies the argument to AI, warning against surrendering human judgment to machines.
  6. Uses shaytan, history, and mortality to urge reflection on returning to Allah and simplifying life.
  7. Closes with prayers, encouragement to support goodness, and community expansion announcements.
Try this week
When religious wording seems confusing, consult a qualified scholar rather than relying on a dictionary or basic Arabic knowledge.
Reflect once or twice a week on mortality and your return to Allah.
Pray for yourself, your family, your children, and people under pressure.
Simplify your religious practice and review how you earn, spend, and give money.
Support goodness and relieve others' pressure instead of adding to it.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that the Qur’an offers the truest speech and that the Prophet’s words and actions provide our best example. He encouraged us to read religious teachings carefully, with context, reflection, and help from knowledgeable scholars rather than using isolated words to argue. He explained that faith should awaken both the mind and the heart while keeping the simple truth of tawhid at its center: Allah created us, and we surrender to Him. He also warned us not to surrender our God-given ability to think, including when using powerful tools such as AI. Most importantly, he reminded us that every soul is journeying back to Allah, so our worship, money, relationships, prayers, and efforts to ease other people’s burdens all matter.

  1. What is one choice you might make differently if you remembered that you are journeying back to Allah?
  2. How can you use technology as a tool without letting it do all your thinking for you?
  3. Who might be carrying a heavy burden right now, and how could our family help?
