Raise courageous youth to serve the oppressed
“The youth are the future of this deen, of this Ummah.”
The story of the 17-year-old Muhammad ibn al-Qasim teaches that Muslim communities should cultivate courageous youth, defend the oppressed, and keep communal disagreements from derailing that mission.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- He highlights restraint after victory and contrasts it with modern violence against civilians.
- He argues that youth should be raised for service, leadership, and concern for the oppressed.
- He warns that internal Muslim disputes can waste young people’s potential.
- He calls for defending oppressed people, including non-Muslims, and responding to Gaza through action, donations, and dua.
In the khateeb's words
“But we have one thing you don't have. We have Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala on our side.”
“the youth are the future of this deen, of this Ummah.”
“We do whatever we can, my dear brothers and sisters, so that we do not get forsaken by Allah in our time of need.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah used the story of the young Muhammad ibn al-Qasim to reflect on responsibility, caring for young people, and helping those facing injustice. The khateeb encouraged us to raise children who think about how they can benefit others alongside their own future plans. He reminded the community to work together for young people, even when adults disagree. He also stressed that justice belongs to everyone, including people of other faiths and people we dislike. Speaking about the suffering in Gaza, he urged us to do what we can, including giving donations and making dua.
- What is one way you could use your talents to help someone this week?
- How can you treat someone fairly when you are upset with them?
- Who could we remember in our dua tonight, and what help could we offer?
