Students can keep faith through the school year
“The Muslim must be the best version of themselves.”
Muslim students can navigate the coming school year faithfully by renewing their intentions, choosing good company, speaking up against wrongdoing, praying on time, and relying on parents who guide, support, and forgive them.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Establishes Muslim identity as representing Islam and introduces intention as foundational.
- Urges students to renew their intentions for school, seeking knowledge and pleasing Allah.
- Encourages good company, balanced parental involvement, and respectful communication at home.
- Tells students to oppose bullying, fighting, vaping, unhealthy relationships, and disrespect by speaking up or seeking adult help.
- Emphasizes timely salah at school and asks parents to secure prayer access.
- Guides parents to prioritize Fajr, support children’s interests, forgive mistakes, and protect their Muslim identity amid school challenges.
In the khateeb's words
“The Muslim must be the best version of themselves. To represent al-Islam in whatever situation they are in.”
“Go bring a teacher. Go bring a dean. Go bring a principal. Speak up. And if you cannot hate it in your heart.”
“We should shoot emails to the school principal. To the school teachers. My child needs five minutes. At 1:30 or 1:45 or 2 o'clock. Just to leave and go pray.”
“Give your child the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he or she is dealing with X, Y, and Z.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds students that school can be part of worship when they seek knowledge with the right intention. It encourages young Muslims to choose good company, leave situations that pull them toward wrong, speak up safely against bullying and harmful behavior, and keep their prayers on time. Parents are asked to help children pray Fajr, support the interests that matter to them, stay involved without controlling every part of life, and stand up for their right to pray at school. When children make mistakes, parents should listen, consider what may be happening beneath the surface, and combine forgiveness with guidance. The whole family is encouraged to protect love for Islam and help one another meet the school year’s challenges.
- What intention can help you turn schoolwork into something meaningful?
- Who helps you make good choices when school feels difficult?
- What can our family do to make prayer easier during the school day?
