Every Islamic ruling has wisdom
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has not commanded a thing upon us except there is a benefit for us in that.”
Because Allah is all-knowing and wise, Muslims should trust and follow His rulings while seeking their wisdom and helping young people ask sincere questions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Warns that teaching Islam only as rules and punishments can alienate young Muslims.
- Explains that every divine command and prohibition contains wisdom, even when its benefits or harms are not immediately visible.
- Uses wine, gambling, and intoxicants to illustrate how apparent benefits can be outweighed by serious harm.
- Applies the principle to modesty, premarital relationships, and other Islamic rulings.
- Distinguishes sincere questions seeking reassurance from defiant doubt, using Ibrahim and Iblis as examples.
- Urges parents to answer children's questions, consult scholars, and combine conviction with continued learning.
In the khateeb's words
“To the point where the rules of Islam Themselves start feeling like Punishments to these children Or these young Muslims”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Has not commanded A thing upon us Except there is a benefit For us In that”
“They are very intelligent So they will ask us questions Which We should have the answers to”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that teaching Islam means helping children understand its wisdom and beauty alongside its rules. He explained that Allah is the most knowledgeable and the most wise, even when we cannot see the reason behind a command. Using intoxicants as an example, he described how an apparent benefit can come with much greater harm. He encouraged us to seek understanding with faith, recalling how Ibrahim asked Allah a question to bring tranquility to his heart. When children ask about Islam, we should take their questions seriously and help them find answers from people with knowledge.
- What is something about prayer or another part of Islam that you would like to understand better?
- When has something difficult turned out to be good for you?
- What helps you feel comfortable asking a grown-up a big question about faith?
