Communication is a responsibility we can learn
“Our goal in communicating is for the other person to understand what is in my mind.”
Effective communication is a learnable responsibility: by checking assumptions, choosing words and tone carefully, and taking concrete steps, we can improve relationships and seek Allah’s pleasure.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Turns inward, urging listeners to examine intentions and recognize projection.
- Uses a Malay/Indonesian hadith to demonstrate how people infer meaning without understanding.
- Explains how miscommunication harms family, friendship, workplace, and community relationships.
- Presents communication as a learnable skill involving words, tone, message, timing, and location.
- Calls listeners to take concrete steps, use available resources, and begin improving with Allah’s help.
In the khateeb's words
“Our goal in communicating. Is for the other person. To understand. What is in my mind.”
“If we take ownership of this. And learn to communicate well. It will be much more effective.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that good communication begins with humility. We should not assume that we fully understand another person or that their misunderstanding is intentional; we should pause, ask, and clarify. The khateeb said communication is a learnable skill shaped by our words, tone, timing, location, and message, and that it affects family, friendships, work, and community. This week, we can take one concrete step to communicate more carefully and ask Allah to help us improve.
- When have you misunderstood someone because you filled in the gaps yourself?
- What tone or timing helps you feel listened to?
- What one communication step will you practice this week?
