Taqwa shields us from Allah’s punishment
“There is no refuge and no escape from you except to you.”
Taqwa means protecting oneself from Allah’s punishment by avoiding disobedience while turning to Him in obedience, and it brings closeness, protection, blessing, and relief.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces a comprehensive ayah addressed to all humanity and explains the importance of Quranic calls.
- Defines taqwa as avoiding Allah’s punishment and shielding oneself from disobedience.
- Uses thorny-path and parent-child analogies to explain cautious love, fear, and refuge in Allah.
- Connects taqwa with khutbah practice, truthful speech, accepted deeds, protection, provision, and blessings.
- Retells the hadith of three men trapped in a cave, emphasizing sincere restraint from zina.
- Closes with a prayer asking Allah to make the congregation people of taqwa.
In the khateeb's words
“attaqwa my brothers and sisters means to avoid Allah's punishment and to place a shield between you and His punishment subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“there is no refuge and no escape from you except to you”
“So I stood up and I left her. Oh Allah, if you know that I did this seeking only your pleasure, then relieve us from here.”
“His faith awakened, returned, and he avoided the punishment of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Taqwa means protecting ourselves from Allah’s punishment by staying away from what He dislikes. The khateeb explained that this is not only fear: we love Allah, draw close to Him, and turn to Him for refuge. He encouraged us to obey Allah with awareness, speak truthfully, and remember Him when temptation comes. In the story of three men trapped in a cave, one man left a sinful opportunity for Allah’s sake, and his sincere deed helped bring relief. Our family can practice taqwa through small, careful choices and by asking Allah to make us among the people of taqwa.
- What is one everyday choice where you can build a “shield” this week?
- How can our family turn to Allah when we feel afraid or tempted?
- What sincere good deed could we do quietly for Allah’s sake?
