Trust Allah when life makes no sense
“There's something good that's happening for me from His kindness, from His mercy, but I just don't understand it.”
Believers should expect Allah’s mercy and wisdom in every circumstance, trusting Him through sin, unanswered prayers, hardship, and destiny.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces husnudhan billah, having a good expectation of Allah, as central to daily faith.
- Uses Allah’s mercy and divine attributes to encourage repentance without despair.
- Explains that unanswered supplications may reflect Allah’s wisdom, protection, or greater reward.
- Frames hardship as a test requiring patience and continued hopeful trust.
- Uses Yusuf’s forgiveness and prophetic teachings to illustrate mercy, careful speech, and trust in destiny.
- Concludes by emphasizing that Allah is more merciful toward the ummah than anyone else.
In the khateeb's words
“we don't view Allah this way we say there's something good that's happening for me from His kindness from His mercy but I just don't understand it”
“no Allah is more merciful of my ummah than even myself and then Allah promised me I will not disappoint you in your ummah”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah encouraged us to expect goodness and mercy from Allah and let that trust shape our everyday lives. The khateeb reminded us to seek forgiveness when we make mistakes and have hope in Allah’s forgiveness. He explained that a dua may not bring exactly what we ask for because Allah knows what will benefit us in this life and the next. He encouraged patience during hardship and used the story of Yusuf to show confidence in Allah’s mercy alongside generous treatment of others. He also reminded parents to speak about Allah in ways that help children trust His kindness, rather than see every difficulty as punishment.
- Which quality of Allah mentioned in the khutbah gives you hope, and why?
- When something you hoped for does not happen, what could help you keep making dua?
- What could we say to comfort someone who thinks a bad day means Allah is angry with them?
