Revelation is the compass for life
“Knowledge of revelation is what brings light at times of greed or desire.”
The khutbah argues that revelation-based knowledge is the compass that gives people true life, steadies them amid confusion, reforms their character and society, and must become a lifelong practice.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Compares revelation to beneficial rain through the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and describes three kinds of people who receive knowledge.
- Explains that revelation-based knowledge distinguishes true life from death and is praised by the Qur'an and Sunnah.
- Shows how revealed knowledge guides relationships, desires, decisions, conflict, and societal reform.
- Warns against circulating confident opinions during confusing situations and urges consultation with sound authorities and people of knowledge.
- Calls listeners to make learning a lifelong habit and benefit from the mosque's knowledge circles and programs.
- Closes with supplications for guidance, forgiveness, global relief, and Masjid al-Aqsa before the prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“some people benefit from it more than others just like rain does”
“knowledge of revelation is what brings light at times of greed or desire knowledge of revelation is what reminds us and sets us aright at times of conflict and the need to make decisions”
“sound knowledge is a protective measure for me, for you, for our families and children. Keeps us on the path. Keeps us firmly rooted.”
“We don't have to specialize in this, but we make it part of our lives.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah compares Allah's revelation to rain: everyone may encounter it, but people benefit from it in different ways. Some people absorb knowledge, live by it, and help others; some preserve and pass on what they can; and some turn away from it. Revealed knowledge gives light when we face desire, conflict, uncertainty, or difficult decisions. The speaker encouraged us to make learning a lifelong journey, attend beneficial circles at the mosque, and consult people of sound knowledge before spreading opinions. He ended by asking Allah to keep us firm upon His Book and the Sunnah.
- What kind of “land” do you think your heart is when you hear beneficial knowledge?
- What should we do before sharing a strong opinion about a confusing situation?
