Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Oct 3, 2024.

Heedlessness blinds us to Allah’s signs

“Our purpose here is to know God.”

The khateeb, at 19:23

In one sentence

Ghaflah, or heedlessness of Allah’s signs, traps us in sensory distractions and breeds spiritual diseases, while awakened hearts can perceive beyond the sensory through remembrance, reflection, and ihsan.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Defines taqwa through its opposite, ghaflah: heedlessness and attraction to falsehood.
  2. Explains ghaflah as the root of arrogance, greed, and other diseases of the heart.
  3. Uses Pharaoh, nature, and human biology to show that divine signs surround us.
  4. Contrasts sensory awareness with an awakened heart that perceives deeper spiritual realities.
  5. Presents knowing and loving Allah as the purpose of worship beyond merely checking boxes.
  6. Prescribes good companionship, dhikr, and slowing down as treatments for ghaflah.
Try this week
Choose close friends and companionship that guide you toward taqwa rather than ghaflah.
Practice dhikr through istighfar, salawat, tahleel, and Quran, even in small amounts.
Slow down daily to make room for meditation, contemplation, and awareness of Allah’s signs.
Reflect on ordinary signs of Allah in nature, the body, and everyday life.

For the dinner table

The khutbah explained that taqwa means being aware of Allah and attentive to what pleases Him, while ghaflah means negligence and heedlessness. We can fall into ghaflah when we become absorbed in status, possessions, distractions, or the merely visible world and forget Allah’s signs all around us. Every flower, tree, human being, and heartbeat is a miracle pointing to Allah’s wisdom and care. Our goal is not merely to check religious boxes, but to know Allah, love Him, and worship Him with an awake heart. The khateeb encouraged us to keep good company, practice dhikr, and slow down enough to notice Allah’s presence and give people around us their rights.

  1. What is one small miracle you noticed today?
  2. What helps you remember Allah when you are busy or distracted?
  3. How could we slow down and be more present with one another this week?
