Learn Surah An-Nas الناس

The last surah of the Qur'an and the second of the two protection surahs: a refuge from the whispers that work on every human heart. Tap between the Arabic, how to say it, and what it means, and listen to each verse recited.

Verse 1

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

Qul aʿūdhu bi-rabbin-nās

“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,”

Verse 2

مَلِكِ النَّاسِ

Malikin-nās

“The Sovereign of mankind,”

Verse 3

إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ

Ilāhin-nās

“The God of mankind,”

Verse 4

مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ

Min sharril-waswāsil-khannās

“From the evil of the retreating whisperer”

Verse 5

الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ

Alladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūrin-nās

“Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind”

Verse 6

مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ

Minal-jinnati wan-nās

“From among the jinn and mankind.”

When reciting, open with Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm, “In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful”, as with every surah recited from the beginning. The English is an interpretation of the meaning (after Saheeh International), not a replacement for the Arabic.

Surah An-Nas, answered

What is 'the retreating whisperer'?

The waswās, the whispering of Shaytan (and of people who play his role) that plants doubt and dark suggestion in the heart, and 'retreats' when Allah is remembered. The surah teaches the response: turn to the Lord, Sovereign, and God of mankind for refuge rather than fighting the whispers alone.

Why do Al-Falaq and An-Nas go together?

They are 'al-muʿawwidhatayn', the two refuge-seeking surahs, revealed as a pair and used together by the Prophet ﷺ for protection. Al-Falaq seeks refuge from harm outside you; An-Nas from the whispering that works inside you. Muslims recite both morning, evening, and before sleep.

Is An-Nas the last surah of the Qur'an?

It is the 114th and final surah in the Qur'an's written order, so a copy of the Qur'an ends with it, though it was not the last surah revealed chronologically. There is a symmetry many teachers point out: the Qur'an opens with Al-Fatiha asking for guidance and ends with mankind under Allah's protection.
