Listening to the Quran keeps hearts alive
“Take just 15 minutes to read the book of Allah.”
Conscious listening to the Quran and prophetic guidance, joined with sound reasoning, keeps the heart alive and leads to guidance, while heedlessness leads to misguidance and regret.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens with the people of Hell regretting that they failed to listen and reason.
- Defines conscious listening as attentive reception of Quranic and prophetic guidance rather than personal whims.
- Traces refusal to listen from impaired reasoning to blindness, deafness, and misguidance.
- Contrasts news and social media with fifteen minutes of Quran reading.
- Identifies barriers including insincere intention, desire, lack of humility, and complacency.
- Connects conscious listening with Fajr prayer and the reasoned courage of the believing man from Pharaoh’s family.
- Closes by encouraging Quran-centered living and supplicating for guidance and mercy.
In the khateeb's words
“the refraining from the conscious listening leads to the misguidance and the misguidance leads to the death of the heart”
“listen to the news watch all over what is in the social media and take just 15 minutes to read the book of Allah”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that listening carefully to Allah’s words helps shape our thinking and guide our choices. As we prepare for Ramadan, he encouraged us to listen to the Qur’an with attention and a present heart, looking for guidance that changes how we live. He asked us to consider how news and social media affect us compared with time spent reading the Qur’an. He also warned that feeling we already know enough, or that everything is going well, can keep us from learning and growing. Together, we can ask what we learned from what we heard and choose one way to put it into practice, while asking Allah to make the Qur’an a source of guidance and comfort.
- What is one thing you heard today that you want to put into practice?
- What helps you pay attention when listening to the Qur’an?
- When has listening carefully helped you make a better choice?
