Creation points to Allah
“It is not possible that we created ourselves.”
The order, precision, and purposeful properties of creation, alongside innate faith and logical reflection, point to Allah and help believers answer doubts while strengthening remembrance and solidarity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah opens with taqwa and identifies Ayat al-Kursi as the Quran’s greatest verse through the story of Ubay ibn Ka'b.
- It revisits the proofs of fitrah and creation, arguing that humans cannot create themselves or exist without a Creator.
- It presents the precision of creation through the human body and the delicate balance of the sun, moon, and oxygen.
- It explains the proof of unique properties through water, crops, seeds, and differing fruits produced from the same rain.
- It applies these proofs to recurring doubts, urging remembrance of Allah, rejection of waswasa, and regular recitation of Ayat al-Kursi.
- It closes with a call to show solidarity at a local event and prayers for oppressed communities.
In the khateeb's words
“it is not possible that we created ourselves it is not possible that we were created for nothing it just doesn't make sense”
“if the sun was to be removed a bit further from us we would freeze to death and if it was any closer then it would be too hard for us to bear”
“these doubts and these questions may come to all of us some of us from time to time so we must be able to address them appropriately”
“we always keep reminding ourselves of the greatness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala so we don't get any of these doubts that may shake our faith and our belief in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah argued that belief in Allah is supported by our innate fitrah, the fact that creation cannot create itself, the precision of the universe, and the purposeful properties of things like water and crops. When doubts arise, we should use sound reflection, remember Allah’s majesty, and recognize whispers that try to shake faith. The khateeb especially encouraged regular recitation of Ayat al-Kursi, including after prayers and before sleep. He also urged the community to show solidarity with a Muslim woman who was attacked on public transit and to pray for people suffering in Gaza, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere.
- Which example in creation makes you most grateful, and why?
- What could you do when a confusing doubt keeps returning?
- How can our family show solidarity when someone in our community is mistreated?
