Marriage needs faith and good character
“The best of you are the best to their wives in all forms of goodness.”
In one sentence
A successful Muslim marriage requires both outward religiosity (deen) and inward good character (khuluq), with each spouse focusing on their responsibilities to the other rather than their own rights.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening with the story of Musa and the two sisters at Madyan, highlighting haya (modesty) and the daughter's description of Musa as strong and trustworthy
- Question from brothers about what to look for in a spouse; the surprising answer that deen alone is not enough
- The Tirmidhi hadith: marry the one whose deen AND khuluq (character) please you
- Advice to husbands: paying bills is not enough; the best of you are best to their wives; generosity and turning a blind eye (taghaful)
- Advice to wives: household duties alone are not enough; the hadith of the four deeds by which a wife enters Jannah
- Warning against feminist and red-pill ideologies infiltrating the community; the 'glass containers' hadith on gentleness
- Closing: flip the rights-question, each spouse should ask about the other's rights over them; du'a for the sick
Try this week
When evaluating a potential spouse, assess both outward religiosity and inward character, do not marry for deen alone
Work on bad qualities of the heart: anger, rudeness, and bad habits, alongside prayer and fasting
Husbands: show affection, mercy, and generosity; practice taghaful, overlook minor faults instead of nitpicking and micromanaging
Husbands: be gentle with words, treating wives like fragile glass so as not to say something that breaks their heart
Wives: treat husbands well, show respect and love, and do not consider household duties alone as sufficient
Reject red-pill and feminist framing of gender relations; take guidance from Quran and Sunnah instead
Each spouse should ask what the other's rights over them are and what Allah will ask them about, rather than demanding their own rights
