Let prayer change how you live
“Ask yourself what your prayer changed about you today.”
The five daily prayers should transform a believer’s private character and everyday treatment of others, so worship continues between prayers through deliberate moral action.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Jumu'ah interrupts daily routines and asks whether prayer actually changes believers afterward.
- A Prophetic narration contrasts abundant worship with harming neighbors against modest worship paired with safety from harm.
- The sermon emphasizes private character, sincerity, and prayer’s role in guiding conduct outside the mosque.
- Believers should keep returning to Allah despite imperfection and support the ISCJ masjid expansion.
- A seven-day challenge asks listeners to connect one daily prayer with practicing one chosen quality.
In the khateeb's words
“Do we go back as the same people who walked in? Or did standing before Allah change something about the way we're going to live?”
“The goal is not to become a person who looks righteous. The goal is to become a person who is sincerely trying to be righteous, whether they are in public or in private and in the moments in between.”
“Salah is not a declaration that we've become perfect. It is a reminder that we will still need Allah.”
“Don't just ask yourself whether you have prayed today. Ask yourself what your prayer changed about you today.”
For the dinner table
Every Friday we stop our busy lives to come to the masjid. Today the khateeb asked whether we go home as the same people who walked in. He told a story about two women from the Prophet's time. One prayed and fasted a lot but hurt her neighbours with her words, and the other did fewer extra deeds but never harmed the people around her. The Prophet spoke well of the second woman, which shows that our worship has to show up in how we treat others. Allah tells us in the Quran that prayer keeps us away from bad deeds, so what we ask for on the prayer mat should guide how we act at home, at school and at work. This week we're challenged to choose one quality after one prayer each day, like patience, kindness or honesty, and try to carry it with us.
- In the story of the two women, why do you think being kind to your neighbours mattered so much?
- What is one quality, like patience, kindness, honesty or gratitude, that you want to bring with you after your prayer this week?
- How do you act when no one is watching, and is it different from how you act in front of your friends or teachers?
