Life and loss are gifts from Allah
“Life is a gift and as believers even loss is a gift.”
Life, children, and even loss are gifts and tests from Allah, so believers should honor parents, raise children with loving discipline, and meet grief with patience, gratitude, prayer, and reliance on Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Urges worshippers to focus during Jumu'ah by closing rows, silencing phones, and avoiding conversation.
- Reflects on pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood as divine gifts and responsibilities.
- Teaches balanced child-rearing through play, instruction, prayer, boundaries, discipline, and independence.
- Explains that wealth and children are tests, and that greater faith brings greater trials.
- Uses a recent child's death and prophetic teachings to offer grieving families patience, hope, and spiritual reward.
- Closes with supplications, civic participation reminders, community announcements, condolences, and a burger-sale notice.
In the khateeb's words
“discipline them even if they refuse because you are giving them orientation teaching them limits they need discipline to be functional as adults”
“the gift that is life it's so precious that Allah blesses us with subhanahu wa ta'ala this is the gift of life and we must appreciate this gift of life”
“life is a gift and as believers even loss is a gift it fortifies us to become people of sabar to become people who rely on Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
Allah gives us life, children, and family as precious gifts, but these gifts also carry responsibility. Parents should give children room to play when they are young, then teach prayer, right and wrong, boundaries, and independence with loving discipline. Faith does not promise a life without tests; when hardship or loss comes, we turn to Allah with patience, prayer, gratitude, and the words that we belong to Him and return to Him. The khutbah especially comforted a family who lost a young child by reminding them that, although grief is real, Allah can make that child a source of mercy and hope in the Hereafter. We can honor these lessons by staying focused in Jumu'ah and caring for one another.
- What is one gift in your life you want to thank Allah for this week?
- Why do families need both love and boundaries?
- What could we do to make Jumu'ah more focused for everyone?
