Resist oppression and care for Gaza
“We should always feel that there must be a way for these things to change and never give up.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims must recognize and resist thulm, oppression and aggression, by refusing to become numb to Gaza and other suffering, offering dua and practical support, and building a faithful legacy before death.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines thulm as a dangerous form of aggression and explains that Allah may delay punishment while giving people opportunities to intervene.
- Warns listeners not to associate with wrongdoers and highlights the special acceptance of the oppressed person's supplication.
- Connects the message to Gaza, emphasizing lessons of dignity, patience, steadfastness, faith, and love of the Qur'an.
- Calls for daily remembrance, dua, practical support, and resistance to becoming numb to suffering.
- Concludes with death, the community janazah, and the question of what legacy each person will leave.
In the khateeb's words
“we should not get numb. we should not get used to it. we should always feel. that. there must be a way. for these things to change. and never give up.”
“the question is. what is. my legacy. and your legacy. when the time comes. that we have to leave.”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb talked about zulm, which means injustice and aggression. It has hurt people since the beginning, starting with Iblis and with Adam's son, who killed his own brother. He taught that Allah sometimes gives wrongdoers time, partly so that we get the chance to stand up and fix things. If nobody tries to put things right, Allah's punishment comes, and no one can escape it. He reminded us that three years ago this month, the genocide in Gaza began, and he said the people of Gaza have taught the world about dignity, patience, trusting Allah and loving the Qur'an. He asked us never to go numb or forget them, and at the very least to keep making du'a for our brothers and sisters everywhere, because we are one ummah and one body. He also reminded us that death comes to everyone, and he asked us to think about the good legacy we want to leave, like the mother of Sister Farzana, who passed away and raised her family to love the Qur'an and the masjid.
- If you saw someone being treated unfairly at school, what could you do to help put it right?
- What is one thing the children of Gaza did that you think was really brave or special?
- What is one good thing you would like people to remember about you one day?
