Dua is worship and a source of help

“If you remember Allah in the times of ease, He will remember you and help you and respond to you in those times of difficulty.”

The khateeb, at 11:13

In one sentence

Du'a is both worship and a means of receiving Allah's help, so believers should call on Allah alone with trust, regularity, proper etiquette, broad requests, and patient persistence while avoiding sinful or harmful supplications.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Defines du'a as worship that draws people closer to Allah regardless of immediate results.
  2. Explains calling on Allah alone, praising Him, and invoking His names.
  3. Encourages regular supplication in ease and confident expectation of Allah's response.
  4. Warns against overly specific, sinful, family-breaking, or self-destructive supplications.
  5. Urges parents to pray for children's improvement and believers not to abandon du'a when answers seem delayed.
Try this week
Call on Allah alone rather than directing worship to anyone else.
Make du'a regularly, including during times of ease.
Use Allah's beautiful names that relate to what you are asking for.
Begin du'a by praising Allah, send blessings on the Prophet, and then make your request.
Prefer broad, comprehensive supplications over excessively specific requests.
Say "Amin" when someone makes a du'a for you rather than responding with "inshallah."
Do not make du'a against yourself, your children, or your wealth.
Avoid asking for sin or the severing of family ties, and do not abandon du'a when answers seem delayed.

For the dinner table

The khutbah taught that du'a is not only a way to ask for things but also an act of worship that brings us closer to Allah. We should call on Allah alone, remember Him regularly, praise Him, send blessings on the Prophet, and ask with confidence. It is better to ask for broad goodness while trusting Allah knows what is best for us. We should never use du'a to harm ourselves, our children, our wealth, or family relationships. Even when an answer seems delayed, we should keep praying and remain hopeful.

  1. When do you find it easiest to remember Allah?
  2. What is one du'a you can make for your family without trying to control every detail?
  3. How can we replace angry words with a prayer for someone to improve?
