Use your freedom to oppose injustice
“Palestinian children are killed for merely being a Palestinian.”
In one sentence
In response to Palestinian suffering, privileged Muslims should choose purposeful faith and use their freedoms and resources to oppose injustice.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with the story of a Gaza child killed after receiving humanitarian supplies.
- Uses Quranic teachings about the sanctity of life and Allah's awareness of oppression.
- Asks listeners to live purposefully and use their privileges for oppressed people.
- Tells Mus'ab ibn Amir's journey from luxury to faith, service, sacrifice, and martyrdom.
- Contrasts forced hardship in Gaza with voluntarily choosing a purposeful life.
- Closes with prophetic guidance to resist evil through action, speech, or inward rejection, including boycotts, awareness, and protests.
Try this week
Live with greater purpose rather than defining life by work, comfort, or entertainment.
Use freedom and voice to raise awareness, share information, and attend protests.
Consider boycotting Starbucks and McDonald's as a response to injustice.
When unable to act directly, speak against wrongdoing or reject it inwardly.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“children do not carry weapons they are not a threat but unfortunately the unfortunate truth is that we live in a world where Palestinian children are killed for merely being a Palestinian”
“your primary purpose of creation is just to work yeah you have to work to pay the bills and provide for your family but it's just to work or just to hang out with your friends”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
The khateeb shared the story of a child in Gaza who walked for food, thanked a doctor, and was then killed. He connected this suffering to the Quran's teaching that every human life has enormous value. He then told how Mus'ab ibn Amir gave up wealth and comfort to live for faith and service. The message for us is to use our freedom, health, voice, and resources purposefully. We can speak up, raise awareness, attend protests, and make thoughtful choices such as boycotts.
- What does living with purpose look like in our family this week?
- How can we respond when we see something wrong but cannot fix it directly?
Keep listening
