Respond to suffering with faith and action
“We should walk out of these doors today not in fear, but in faith.”
In a time of persecution and global Muslim suffering, believers should respond not with fear or diluted faith but with gratitude, patient steadfastness, prayer, trust in Allah, good character, learning, service, and communal unity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with taqwa, gratitude, and faithful speech.
- Frames global Muslim suffering, especially in Gaza, as a test requiring dua followed by support and action.
- Explains sabr, tawakkul, and trials as tests that distinguish obedience and bring reward.
- Urges believers to seek Allah's approval, inspired by Bilal's steadfast monotheism.
- Calls for prayer, good character, religious education, neighborly service, and unity.
- Closes with a prayer for courage, protection, patience, relief, and steadfast faith.
In the khateeb's words
“If we cannot do anything physically, then we can support financially. If we cannot support financially, then we can support with our tongues, spreading the word, and supporting other people who are supporting.”
“It has nothing to do with being passive. It is about endurance without complaint. Endurance and perseverance.”
“We must persevere and continue to spread the teachings of this beautiful deen until the day that we die.”
“We should walk out of these doors today not in fear, but in faith. Putting our complete trust in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us to be grateful for the blessings Allah has given us and to remember those who have less. Muslims around the world are suffering, and we should respond first with dua, then with whatever support and action we can offer. Hardship is a test, so patience means trusting Allah and continuing to obey Him without giving up. We should remain firm in prayer, the Quran, and the Sunnah while showing good character and serving our neighbors. The sermon ends by encouraging us to leave Jumu'ah with faith, courage, unity, and trust in Allah.
- What is one blessing you can be more grateful for this week?
- When is patience difficult for you, and what might steadfastness look like?
- How could our family serve a neighbor or support someone suffering?
