Rely on Allah while making wise plans

“No strategy, no investment by itself will ever buy you anything if it doesn't have the help of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with it.”

The khateeb, at 21:55

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that seeking Allah's love requires tawakkul, reliance on Allah, while still making responsible, divinely permitted plans and recognizing that outcomes belong to Allah.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Frames attaining Allah's love as life's highest goal through examples of Ubayy ibn Ka'b and Ali ibn Abi Talib.
  2. Introduces tawakkul as a quality Allah loves and addresses how hardship can provoke doubt and despair.
  3. Explains the verse “Qul lan yusibana...” as reassurance that Allah's decree is ultimately for believers' good.
  4. Uses Nuh's ark and his son's mountain plan to distinguish lawful means from strategies contrary to revelation.
  5. Uses Ya'qub's advice and the Hijrah to show that prudent planning coexists with surrender to Allah's decree.
  6. Closes by directing reliance toward Allah rather than wealth, knowledge, authority, or intellect, followed by announcements and prayer.
Try this week
Make plans and use means that Allah permits while placing reliance on Him.
When facing hardship, remember that Allah's decree is ultimately for the believer's good.
After success, thank Allah and recognize that the means themselves have no independent power.
Do not let personal intelligence, wealth, authority, or strategy replace reliance on Allah.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us that our purpose in life is to seek Allah's love, and that Allah loves those who rely on Him. Trusting Allah does not mean giving up on preparation or effort. Nuh built the ark as Allah instructed, showing us that we should use the means Allah permits while placing our trust in Him. Ya'qub made a plan to protect his sons, while recognizing that he could not control Allah's decree. The Prophet also stayed in the cave while reassuring Abu Bakr that Allah was with them. As a family, we can prepare carefully, turn to Allah when we feel afraid, and thank Him for the help we receive.

  1. What is something you are preparing for, and how could you remember Allah while doing your part?
  2. How could we help one another trust Allah when we feel worried?
  3. What happened this week that you would like to thank Allah for?
