Allah’s blessings require gratitude
In one sentence
Because Allah has showered us with countless seen and unseen blessings, gratitude (shukr) is an obligation so central to faith that its opposite is not mere ingratitude but kufr (disbelief) itself.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening praise and taqwa verses (Aal-Imran, al-Ahzab)
- Allah's blessings are uncountable, both visible and hidden
- Our wajib in response: being thankful (shakir) to Allah
- Story of Sulaiman and the throne of the Queen of Sheba: blessings are a test of gratitude
- Prophetic advice: look above you in religion, below you in dunya, and say Alhamdulillah
- Second part: the dua taught to Mu'adh to repeat after every prayer
- Imam Shafi'i: we can never thank Allah enough; the greatest blessing is iman itself
Try this week
Say Alhamdulillah regularly, acknowledging that every blessing small or big is from Allah
When comparing worldly matters, look at those below you (no home, food, or clean water) instead of envying those above
In religious matters, look at those above you (Quran readers, donors, those fasting) and ask Allah to be among them
Repeat the dua 'Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibadatik' after every prayer
Use Allah's blessings to please Him, not to displease Him
Go read the story of Prophet Sulaiman and the Queen of Sheba in the Quran
