Be content with Allah’s will
“You do not pick and choose.”
True contentment with Allah means accepting Him as Lord, Islam as a complete way of life, and Muhammad as Prophet, then living that acceptance through obedience, trust in His decree, and perseverance.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces ridha through Surah al-Bayinah, emphasizing Allah’s pleasure with faithful believers and their pleasure with Him.
- Presents the hadith promising Jannah to those content with Allah as Lord, Islam as deen, and Muhammad as Prophet.
- Explains contentment as following what pleases Allah and accepting whatever He gives or withholds.
- Describes four foundations of ridha: gratitude for blessings, acceptance of deprivation, returning to Allah when lost, and obeying His commands.
- Applies the concept to accepting Islam fully rather than selectively negotiating halal, haram, obligations, or recommended deeds.
- Connects ridha with love for and loyalty to the Prophet, recalling Umar’s correction and the Prophet’s prayer at Badr.
- Concludes with prayers for steadfastness, lawful provision, relief for the oppressed, and acceptance of the worshippers’ deeds.
In the khateeb's words
“when it comes to matters of halal and haram there is no way to negotiate”
“being content with the deen of Allah pertains that you take the deen of Allah all as a whole and you do not pick and choose”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that ridha means being content with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our way of life, and Muhammad as our Prophet. This contentment is active: we worship Allah, obey His commands, accept what He gives or withholds, and return to Him when we feel lost. We should accept Islam as a whole rather than choosing only the practices we prefer. Loving and following the Prophet helps us live this attitude with patience and perseverance. The goal is to become people with whom Allah is pleased and who are pleased with Him.
- What is one blessing or difficulty this week where we can practice being content with Allah?
- Which part of Islam do you want to understand or practice more consistently?
