Dua is a lifeline to Allah
“Never give up making du'a because of your sins.”
Dua is an accessible form of worship and a lifeline to Allah, cultivated through praise, certainty, humility, lawful living, inclusive supplication, and persistent hope.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Jumu'ah is an opportunity for spiritual renewal, and dua is among the easiest opportunities to draw closer to Allah.
- Dua is distinguished from ordinary calling and presented as the essence and worship of submission to Allah.
- The khutbah explains pre-dua etiquette: praise Allah, have certainty, understand the varied forms of acceptance, and avoid haram conduct.
- During and after dua, believers should pray with humility, remember others and the wider ummah, and remain hopeful rather than despairing.
- Listeners are encouraged to study the supplications of prophets, companions, scholars, and righteous people, followed by prayers for the sick, bereaved, oppressed, and suffering Muslims.
In the khateeb's words
“That is worshipping Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Let alone the reward that comes with that And the purification of the heart That comes with that”
“But He gave you something better Because He knows what you need And He knows He knows what's better for you Subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“Never give up Making du'a Because of your sins Never give up Making du'a Because of what you know About yourself”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that dua is worship and an opportunity to draw close to Allah throughout our lives. He encouraged us to begin by praising Allah, ask with humility, and trust that Allah hears and accepts our dua. When we do not see the result we wanted, good may come through forgiveness, another blessing, protection from harm, or a reward in the hereafter. We should work to leave sinful habits behind, but our mistakes should never make us stop calling upon Allah. He also reminded us to pray for other people and to remain hopeful while continuing our own efforts to do good.
- What would you like to thank Allah for before asking Him for something today?
- Who could we include in our dua tonight, and what could we ask for them?
- What could help you keep making dua when the thing you want has not happened yet?
