Build a living relationship with Allah
“We have to turn back to Allah.”
A believer should cultivate a living relationship with Allah by reflecting on the Quran, strengthening faith, relying on Allah, and practicing turning to Him in every circumstance.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Questions the congregation’s attentiveness to Allah in prayer and Quran recitation
- Explains worship and reflection as the purpose and proper use of the Quran
- Uses the good tree metaphor to connect rooted faith with righteous conduct
- Uses the spider’s web to warn against relying on worldly security
- Uses the fly example to emphasize Allah’s power and human dependence
- Calls listeners to build a daily bond with Allah and implement Quranic guidance
In the khateeb's words
“The question is, what is our relationship with Allah Ta'ala, our creator?”
“Quran is the book. It's not meant to be left in the shelves.”
“We have a book, Quran, the book of Allah ta'ala and we're still seeking solutions for our problems.”
“But the first thing, brothers and sisters, we have to turn back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Shaikh Umar invited us to think about our relationship with Allah and how much attention we give Him in prayer and when hearing Quran. He reminded us that Quran is guidance for everyday life, and encouraged us to reflect on its verses and act on what we learn. He compared strong faith to a tree with deep roots whose fruit appears in our actions, especially during hard times. He encouraged us to call upon Allah during good times so that turning to Him becomes a habit when life is difficult, while still taking practical steps to address our problems. He also reminded us that our blessings come from Allah and that even our good deeds should leave us humble and dependent on Him.
- What could help you pay closer attention during your next prayer?
- What blessing can you thank Allah for today?
