Every deed will be shown and judged

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it to others not just in recitation but also in meaning.”

The khateeb, at 22:45

In one sentence

Surah al-Zalzalah teaches that resurrection and complete accountability make every small good deed valuable and every sin serious, so believers must prepare through Quranic learning and righteous action.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  3. Explains that bodies, wealth, and status are stripped away, while buried treasures expose worldly motives.
  4. Presents the earth, tongues, hands, and feet as witnesses, with people gathered to see their deeds.
  5. Emphasizes that every speck of good and evil will be shown, contrasting believers' lasting reward with disbelievers' temporary worldly recompense.

For the dinner table

The khutbah uses Surah al-Zalzalah to help us picture the Day of Judgment, when the earth will shake, the dead will be raised, and hidden realities will become clear. We will have no wealth, possessions, or status to rely on, only our deeds. The earth, our bodies, and our actions will testify, and even the smallest good or evil will be shown. This should wake us up to avoid sins we treat as small and to value every act of goodness. We should learn the Quran with its meaning, reflect on it, act on it, and teach it to others.

  1. What is one small good deed you can do today?
  2. What worldly thing might distract us from preparing through our deeds?
  3. What Quran lesson would you like to learn and teach someone else?
