Use your blessings before they fade
“Once you lose time, it will never come back.”
Because our blessings and time are limited, we should proactively use youth, health, wealth, free time, and life to serve others and prepare for the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Reflects on Allah’s countless gifts and the unexpected death of community member Omar Hakeem.
- Introduces the Prophet’s teaching to use five blessings before their reversals: youth, health, wealth, free time, and life.
- Explains that lost time cannot return and calls listeners to be proactive rather than idle.
- Uses Omar Hakeem’s questions, “What are you doing?” and “What are you working on?”, to prompt purposeful self-reflection.
- Urges concrete service to family, the masjid, the ummah, and suffering people, followed by prayers for forgiveness, relief, and al-Aqsa.
In the khateeb's words
“Once you lose time It will never come back We have to take advantage of our time Because we don't know how much of it we have”
“We can't just talk about it We can't just think about it We have to actually do it”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that Allah has given us blessings we cannot count, but we do not know how long we will have them. The Prophet taught us to use five things before they change: youth before old age, health before sickness, wealth before poverty, free time before busyness, and life before death. The khateeb encouraged us not to sit around or merely talk, but to ask what we are working on and find ways to help our family, masjid, ummah, and people who are suffering. Remembering Brother Omar Hakeem’s passing made this reminder especially personal. We can begin today by choosing one useful act and doing it sincerely for Allah.
- Which blessing, time, health, or something else, are you most thankful for today?
- What is one helpful thing you can do for our family or community this week?
- When you ask yourself, “What are you working on?”, what answer would you like to give?
