Every Muslim should serve the masjid
“You should exert yourself and do your utmost in serving the Muslim Ummah and serving the house of Allah.”
The masjid was the first priority of the Prophet and his community, and every Muslim, whatever their capacity or expertise, has a responsibility to serve it sincerely for the sake of Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Serve the masjid and others purely for Allah's sake, seeking no human praise or reward.
- The Sahaba built the Prophet's Masjid together, with the Prophet working alongside them.
- Ammar ibn Yasir carried two bricks and earned double reward, showing the value of extra effort.
- Talq ibn Ali al-Hanafi was entrusted with masonry because of his skill, showing the duty to use and defer to expertise.
- A closing summary: masjid first, lead by example, exert yourself within your capacity, and consult experts.
- Allah sees every sincere deed and will not waste the reward of the good-doers.
In the khateeb's words
“so the harder you work and the more effort you put for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala the more reward you shall get in the sight of Allah”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that the masjid and serving Allah should be central priorities for a thriving Muslim community. The Prophet built the masjid alongside the Companions, showing that leaders should participate and lead by example. Everyone has a role to play, and we should contribute according to our abilities while seeking expert help when needed. Our efforts may go unnoticed by people, but Allah sees and rewards every sincere deed. We can serve the masjid, our community, and Islam through our time, skills, character, and generosity.
- What is one way you could help at the masjid this week?
- What skill or talent could you use to serve other people?
- How do you feel when you help someone and nobody notices?
