Good advice is a communal duty
“Doing a good deed is a command of Allah and inviting towards a good deed is a command of Allah.”
Muslims must balance personal worship with the communal duty to encourage good and discourage wrongdoing, while humbly working to practice what they teach.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Establishes worship as humanity’s primary purpose while emphasizing family and community obligations.
- Introduces enjoining good and forbidding evil as a defining communal responsibility.
- Explains how this duty strengthens faith and gives the ummah distinctive responsibility after the final Prophet.
- Uses the people of Saturday and Luqman’s advice to illustrate the obligation and its costs.
- Clarifies that personal imperfection does not cancel the duty to advise others, though advice should be humble and self-directed.
- Concludes that practicing good, inviting good, avoiding evil, and discouraging evil are separate obligations.
In the khateeb's words
“We do not live in isolation, we do not live in caves, we live in communities.”
“And if a person is focused only on his personal ibadah and personal taqwa and does not fulfill the communal obligations, this person will also be neglected in the eyes of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“so doing a good deed is a command of Allah and inviting towards a good deed is a command of Allah”
“there are two independent commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala one is not contingent on the other if you're doing one we should start the other”
For the dinner table
Allah created us to worship Him, but He also placed us in families and communities with responsibilities to one another. The khateeb explained that Muslims should care about the spiritual well-being of others by encouraging good and discouraging wrong. This duty remains important even when we are still working on ourselves; giving good advice and practicing it are separate responsibilities. We should speak humbly, include ourselves in “we,” and be patient when this work brings opposition. The takeaway is to strengthen our own faith while helping our families and community move toward what is good.
- How can we give advice kindly when we are still working on the same issue?
- Where does our family need more patience when trying to do what is right?
