Prepare to meet Allah after death

“Who ever reflects upon these magnificent creations realizes the greatness and the power of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”

The khateeb, at 11:10

In one sentence

Following the Prophet's sunnah of preaching from Surah Qaf on Fridays, the khutbah walks through the surah to remind listeners that Allah's signs in creation, the fate of past nations, and the recording of every word should move us to prepare for death, resurrection, and the meeting with Allah.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening taqwa verses and the hadith of Umm Hisham: the Prophet regularly recited Surah Qaf in the Friday khutbah
  2. Why the Prophet chose Surah Qaf: strong warnings, moving verses, the recording of every word, death, resurrection, Paradise and Hellfire
  3. Recitation of the surah's opening: the disbelievers' astonishment and denial of resurrection
  4. Signs in creation, the sky, earth, mountains, blessed rain reviving dead land, as proof of Allah's power and His sole right to worship
  5. The destruction of past nations who denied their messengers: Nuh's people, Thamud, 'Aad, Fir'awn, and others
  6. A rational proof of resurrection: the One who created the first time can create again
  7. Closing warning: Allah is closer than the jugular vein, two angels record every word, beware heedlessness and prepare to meet your Lord
  8. The agony of death, the Trumpet, and the removal of the veil on the Day of Judgment

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb told us that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, loved to recite Surah Qaf in his Friday sermons, so we studied it together. The surah reminds us that Allah created the sky, the earth, the rain that brings dead land back to life, and that the One who did all that can surely raise us after death. It warns us about nations long ago who refused to listen to their prophets and were destroyed. It also tells us that two angels sit with each of us, writing down every single word we say. The message is simple but serious: don't let life distract you, remember Allah, watch your words, and get ready for the day you meet Him.

  1. If two angels were writing down everything you said today, what would you be most proud of, and what would you want to erase?
  2. What is one thing in nature that amazes you and reminds you of Allah?
  3. Why do you think the Prophet kept repeating the same surah every Friday instead of always picking something new?
