Let worship shape your whole life
“We articulate our living, our food, and drink according to how He wants us to consume those things.”
People should judge themselves and others by the direction Allah is taking them and organize their daily lives around worship, remembrance, and obedience before death arrives.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reject judging people by their past, clothing, or status; focus on the transformation Allah is bringing about.
- Uses Abu Jahl, Musa, Adam, and blacksmithing to illustrate arrogance, purification, and growth.
- Explains that human creativity, work, and civilization must remain governed by the purpose of worship.
- Uses the master-and-slave parable and angel-of-death narrative to warn against prioritizing personal desires over Allah's commands.
- Presents dua, prostration, remembrance, and salawat as sources of tranquility and readiness.
- Urges listeners to appreciate worship, attend remembrance gatherings, and continually praise the Prophet.
In the khateeb's words
“Don't look at where a person's been. Look where Allah's taken them.”
“All He asks from you is that we do this. One simple thing. That we articulate our ideas. We articulate our living, our food, and drink according to how He wants us to consume those things.”
“There's no state greater than that to be in, than what you were created for.”
“So as you go out through this month, celebrate the praise of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Mention him as much as possible.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us not to define people by where they started, because Allah can guide, shape, and elevate them in ways we cannot yet see. Like Musa in the desert and steel in a blacksmith’s fire, difficult experiences can prepare a person for a greater purpose. We were encouraged to keep our work, choices, and concerns centered on worshipping and obeying Allah rather than becoming distracted by worldly priorities. The khateeb also taught that du'a and remembrance are themselves precious gifts, even when the answer does not arrive as we expected. Finally, he encouraged gratitude for access to prayer, gatherings of remembrance, and the opportunity to honor and send prayers upon the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
- When have you seen someone grow beyond the way others once viewed them?
- What is one blessing or opportunity from Allah that you want to appreciate more?
- How could remembering Allah help you when you feel worried or distracted?
