A true Muslim keeps others safe

“Your spouse is a part of you.”

The khateeb, at 22:03

In one sentence

A true Muslim, especially a husband, must make other Muslims safe from his tongue and his hand, and marriage is a covenant that demands gentle speech, physical restraint, and God-consciousness at home as well as in public.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. The true Muslim is defined as one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.
  2. The story of the man who killed one hundred souls illustrates that true hijrah means leaving the environment of sin.
  3. The tongue is mentioned before the hand because verbal harm, backbiting, lying, cursing, and harmful social media, is the easiest transgression.
  4. Marriage is a covenant made in Allah's name, yet many Muslims display piety in public while becoming harsh at home.
  5. The Prophet never struck women, servants, or animals, and Islam prohibits striking the face.
  6. Allah condemns harming innocent believers, and husbands owe wives food, clothing, respectful speech, and the option of reconciliation.
  7. Every word and every blow will be questioned on the Day of Judgment, so believers must fear Allah more than legal consequences.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that a true Muslim protects others from harm caused by the tongue and the hand. Hijrah can mean leaving sinful habits and harmful influences for Allah, even without moving to a new place. The khateeb especially emphasized gentleness, respect, and responsibility within marriage and warned against harsh words, humiliation, and physical harm. He reminded parents that children learn about relationships by watching how adults treat one another. We can take this message home by speaking kindly, practicing forgiveness, and making our homes places of safety and mercy.
