Follow the Prophetic path to marriage
“Today I wanted to share a brief reminder with myself and with you regarding the importance of marriage.”
In one sentence
The Muslim community is in crisis because Muslims are avoiding marriage and abandoning the Shariah's safeguards around it, and the remedy is fixing our own hearts, staying connected to the Quran daily, and following the Prophetic process of marriage instead of cultural or personal excuses.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening praise and recitation of Surah Al-Imran 3:102-104 on taqwa, unity, and holding to the rope of Allah
- The rope of Allah is the Quran: daily engagement with it (even just Al-Fatiha and Al-Ikhlas) is the key to community
- Allah alone unites hearts (8:63); our job is fixing our own hearts, not policing who is or isn't practicing
- Pivot to the crisis: growing numbers of Muslims refusing to marry, built on excuses, and families are the foundation of community
- Hadith of the three men and 'whoever turns away from my sunnah is not of me', marriage is the Prophetic way; the Prophet built bonds through marriage
- Rebutting excuses: fear of responsibility, waiting for sparks, excessive dowries, fake 'right hand possession' arrangements, same-gender companionship
- Shariah safeguards: the wali must vet properly, use the engagement (khutbah) period, get a marriage contract and premarital counseling
- Closing hadith: a woman (or man) is married for four reasons, choose the one grounded in faith; make du'a and purify hearts
Try this week
Engage with the Quran every day, even if only reciting Surah al-Fatiha and Surah al-Ikhlas from memory
Work on your own heart and faith instead of judging who is or isn't practicing
If you are of marriageable age and employed, pursue marriage rather than staying single or remaining in haram relationships
Sisters: do not demand dowries beyond an average person's capacity ($20-30k)
Use the wali properly: the guardian must actually vet the suitor, not just make a couple of phone calls
Use the shariah engagement (khutbah) period to genuinely assess compatibility instead of a quick 'sit down'
Get a written marriage contract and premarital counseling before marrying
Choose spouses for deen and character over wealth, looks, or family status
Make du'a for brothers and sisters, and put a positive word in the ear of unmarried people you know
