Extended family should protect the marriage

IFN · Azfar

“The role of the family is to protect the marriage not to damage the marriage.”

The khateeb, at 9:47

In one sentence

The divinely assigned role of extended family and in-laws is islah, reconciliation that protects a marriage's sakina, and this is lived out through four principles: recognizing the new household, granting space, separating respect from control, and keeping ordinary disputes out of the family court.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Foundational role of extended family: islah (reconciliation), protecting the marriage rather than fueling conflict
  2. Principle one for parents: marriage creates a new household and everyone must learn a new role, including how to be good in-laws
  3. Principle two: every marriage needs space, privacy, and healthy boundaries, whether in separate homes or joint family arrangements
  4. Second khutbah: marriage means joining an entire ecosystem of nasab and sihra (blood and marriage ties)
  5. Principle three: respect does not mean control, birr al-walidayn applies to one's own parents, and no one may harm a marriage in the name of culture or obedience
  6. Principle four for couples: do not bring every disagreement to parents; reconcile privately as Ali and Fatima did
  7. Closing dua for reconciliation, love between hearts, and sakina in homes
Try this week
Parents: occasionally ask yourself, 'Am I part of the sakina, or am I creating fitna? Am I building islah or escalating?'
Give your married children space with love, privacy and healthy boundaries, whether in separate or joint living arrangements
Learn the new roles marriage creates: husband, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, in-laws need education too
Distinguish respect from control: speak with honor to extended family, but do not obey parental preferences without consulting your spouse
Do not take every marital disagreement to your parents; work it out between yourselves first, and only involve family arbitrators when you cannot resolve it
Make dua for a sick young community member, Brother Aqib

For the dinner table

This khutbah taught that the job of extended family, parents, in-laws, everyone, is islah: reconciliation, not escalation. Family should pour water on the fire of a marriage, not fuel it. The imam shared four principles: marriage creates a new household, every marriage needs space and privacy, respect for parents is not the same as control, and couples should not run to their parents with every disagreement. He reminded us that even Ali and Fatima, the best of couples, had disputes, and resolved them gently. The goal is a home filled with sakina, the tranquility Allah promises between spouses.

  1. What is one way grandparents or aunts and uncles make our family stronger?
  2. When two people you love are arguing, what does it mean to 'pour water on the fire'?
