Muslims must defend human dignity together
“The world does not simply need Muslims defending Islam.”
In a moment of authoritarianism, fear, and oppression, Muslims must answer Allah’s call by cultivating inner capacity, finding their voice, building coalitions, and demonstrating Islam’s defense of human dignity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Islam as a transformative religion requiring believers to respond when their convictions are tested.
- Uses Musa’s supplication before Pharaoh to frame every generation as having a decisive moment.
- Applies the lesson to authoritarianism, scapegoating, fear-mongering, and harmful narratives about communities.
- Calls Muslims to overcome fear, find their voice, and accept responsibility rather than retreat.
- Urges coalition-building, shared interests, and combined resources beyond individual mosques, citing Medina.
- Closes by emphasizing organized power, human dignity, and honoring Imam Khalil Akbar’s legacy through local action.
In the khateeb's words
“He asked Allah, give me the capacity to respond in the moment. Give me the capacity. Expand me. Make it easy for me.”
“The world does not simply need Muslims defending Islam. It needs Muslims demonstrating what Islam contributes to the defense of human dignity.”
“We will not face this moment and win if we're trying to do it alone. So that means we've got to come outside of our beautiful masajid.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that faith is not only something we believe inside; it must shape how we respond when life is difficult. The speaker used Musa’s prayer before Pharaoh to teach us to ask Allah for courage, clear speech, and the strength to carry our responsibilities. We were urged to notice fear and harmful stories about people, then build relationships and coalitions that protect everyone’s dignity. We cannot meet serious challenges alone, so we should combine our gifts and work with people who share important goals even when we disagree on everything. This week, we can pray for guidance, find one way to serve our wider community, and take a step toward honoring the good legacy of those who taught us.
- What fear or challenge might Allah be asking us to face with courage?
- How can our family protect another person’s dignity this week?
- Who could we work with even if we do not agree on everything?
