Prepare for the Mahdi by serving others
“There's a requirement of empathy and sympathy that each and every one of us should have for other people who are going through difficulties.”
Believers should prepare for Imam al-Mahdi’s return by cultivating empathy, justice, mercy, social connection, sincere mourning, good character, prayer, and service.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Completes a discussion of responsibilities for preparing an Islamic government before the return of the 12th Imam.
- Urges empathy for people’s hardships and engagement beyond one’s financial, cultural, or national bubble.
- Uses Imam Ali’s leadership and advice to emphasize accessible governance and avoiding displays that create envy or despair.
- Calls for Muharram and Safar gatherings to produce sincere inner transformation rather than passive attendance.
- Reminds mourners to maintain good character, preserve prayer times, avoid food waste, and volunteer in service of others.
In the khateeb's words
“there's a requirement of empathy and sympathy that each and every one of us should have for other people who are going through difficulties that maybe we are not going through”
“the idea is to meet people this idea is to understand what other people are going through what other people are thinking”
“the true effect is when the inside matches the external.”
For the dinner table
Sheikh Jaffer reminded us that preparing for the return of the 12th Imam includes a pure heart, fairness, mercy, and understanding other people's difficulties. Getting to know people outside our usual circles helps us notice struggles we might otherwise miss. We can enjoy Allah's blessings while being thoughtful about how showing them off may affect others. As Muharram and Safar approach, he encouraged us to attend gatherings with a sincere desire to learn, grow closer to Allah, and become better people. He reminded us to welcome others kindly, protect our prayers, avoid wasting food, and find ways to serve.
- Who could we get to know better after prayers, and what could we learn from them?
- How could we help someone feel welcome and comfortable at the mosque?
