Community revival begins with serving others
“You want more and you want more and you want more and the void is never filled.”
Muslims in Baltimore must reverse community decline by recommitting to intellectual excellence, protecting the vulnerable, and taking up civic responsibility, beginning with real dedication to Masjid al-Haq.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Civilizations pass through rise, peak, decline, decay, and revival, and Allah's mechanism for revival is the Quran and Sunnah
- The first local generation built strong Islamic schools, businesses, and community life, but later generations drifted from the foundational goal of la ilaha illallah
- We have lost the drive for intellectual excellence, leaving our children uneducated in Islam and sending them into secular systems without a purpose of service
- We have abandoned responsibility for the poor and vulnerable, especially women, children, and the elderly, who then seek safety outside the community
- We have become disconnected from civic duty and must enter public-service professions so the community is not merely consumed by systems it does not shape
- Closing call to lock in, attend follow-up sessions, volunteer, donate, and offer whatever time and skill one has to the masjid
In the khateeb's words
“If you think that it's okay because Islam has become mainstream to send your children to public school, you're going to wake up living with a stranger.”
“If you leave off the consciousness of being in service, then what? You become just a regular consumer in a society like this. You want more and you want more and you want more and the void is never filled.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that communities rise, decline, and can be revived through the Quran and Sunnah. Revival begins when faith becomes the foundation of daily life, not just something we visit on Fridays. We were encouraged to seek knowledge, educate our children, and use our abilities to serve others. The khateeb especially emphasized protecting vulnerable people and creating a safe, caring community. Everyone has something to contribute, so we should show up with sincere hearts and commit ourselves to serving Allah and His creation.
- What is one kind of knowledge you want to learn and use to help people?
- What is one small way our family could serve the masjid or a neighbor this week?
- What helps you feel safe, welcomed, and connected in a community?
