Gratitude grows through humble service
“Allah will not be displeased with you.”
Gratitude for Allah’s blessings should be cultivated by remembering how He carried us through vulnerability and serving people facing similar hardships.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Calls listeners to renew taqwa and recognize Allah’s many blessings rather than fixating on problems.
- Explains the context of Surah al-Duha and Allah’s reassurance that He had not abandoned the Prophet.
- Applies the verses about orphanhood, guidance, and need to listeners’ own experiences of vulnerability and rescue.
- Connects gratitude with responsibilities toward orphans, refugees, petitioners, and others facing similar difficulties.
- Urges listeners to express gratitude through humble service and closes with prayers for relief, safety, guidance, and protection.
In the khateeb's words
“To be mindful of Allah inside and out For this mindfulness, this taqwa Is the path to paradise”
“Part of the blessing Of the daily and nightly dhikr That we're encouraged to do Is in these du'as of the Prophet”
“Allah will not abandon you Allah will not be displeased with you And Allah will give you More to come than what you have”
“Rather be someone Who shows your gratitude By saying Ya Allah You took me Through this situation I'm not going To complain about it I'm not going To let Shaytan Make me focus on it”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us to be mindful of Allah wherever we are and to notice the many blessings in our lives. He encouraged us to say Alhamdulillah and reflect on those blessings when we remember Allah. Through Surah al-Duhah, he described how Allah reassured the Prophet and reminded him of the shelter, guidance, and provision he had received. He invited us to remember how Allah has helped us through our own difficult times and to turn that gratitude into care for others. Our experiences can help us understand people facing similar struggles, and the khateeb ended by praying for relief for everyone still going through hardship.
- What blessing did you notice today that you sometimes forget to thank Allah for?
- When has someone helped you through something difficult, and what did their kindness mean to you?
- How could our family help someone going through a difficulty we understand?
