Gratitude protects the heart from Shaytan
“A grateful heart is a fortress that shaitan cannot enter.”
Gratitude is a worldview and spiritual shield that protects believers from Shaytan's attacks while opening the way to greater blessings, closeness to Allah, and peace.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines gratitude as a worldview that expands blessings, using Quranic reminders and a Zimbabwe story.
- Explains that Shaytan's central aim is to make people ungrateful through four directions.
- Describes attacks through future anxiety, past shame, doubts about good deeds, and temptations.
- Presents gratitude and sujood as fortresses against Shaytan.
- Offers practices of intentional praise, noticing blessings, thanking people, and avoiding upward comparison.
- Closes by urging listeners to identify an ignored blessing and thank Allah for it.
In the khateeb's words
“Gratitude is not just a word It is a world view A mindset A way of interpreting one's every moment in life”
“That gratitude Is not about How much you have But it is about How much That you can see The blessings That are all around us”
“A grateful heart Is a fortress That shaitan cannot enter”
“Thanking people Is thanking Allah Min la yushkur al nas La yushkur Allah He who does not Thank people Does not thank Allah”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that gratitude is more than saying Alhamdulillah; it is a way of seeing the blessings already present in our lives. Shaytan tries to weaken that gratitude through fear about the future, shame about the past, doubts about our good deeds, and distracting temptations. We can protect our hearts by noticing small blessings, thanking people, remembering Allah, and comparing ourselves with those who have less rather than those who have more. Each of us should choose one blessing we have overlooked and thank Allah for it today.
- What is one blessing you noticed today that you usually overlook?
- When does comparison make you less grateful, and what could you do instead?
- Who is someone you could thank more sincerely this week?
