Turn gratitude into worship and service
“This is another level of showing gratitude to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through our action.”
Gratitude for Allah's blessings should become worship, responsible excellence, generosity, and steadfast solidarity with the oppressed.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls listeners to daily gratitude for Islam, safety, health, and food, while remembering people in Gaza.
- Uses Sulayman's encounter with the ants and his dua to show gratitude through asking for strength and righteous action.
- Presents the Prophet's night prayer as an example, then urges qiyam, mosque attendance, dua, and charity.
- Applies Sulayman's disciplined leadership and verification of information to family, work, and community responsibilities.
- Continues the Queen of Sheba narrative to contrast gratitude and submission with arrogance and reliance on wealth.
- Connects Gaza's return, patience, and steadfastness to gratitude, and calls for continued awareness and community involvement.
In the khateeb's words
“And we have that truth and we have that meaning. So we should be very grateful for that every single day, every one of us.”
“So this is another level of showing gratitude to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through our action.”
“Whatever position Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has granted you, do it to the best of your ability.”
“After everything she has gone through, all the trauma, she can just focus on the trauma and the difficulty, but instead, she's trying to focus on the positive.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that gratitude is more than saying Alhamdulillah. We show gratitude by worshipping Allah, doing our responsibilities well, helping others, and using our blessings for good. The story of Sulayman teaches us to ask Allah for the strength to be grateful and to respond to blessings with righteous action. The people of Gaza were presented as an example of patience, courage, and hope despite enormous suffering. This week, we can practice gratitude through prayer, charity, service, and remembering those who are hurting.
- What is one blessing you often take for granted?
- How could you turn one blessing into a good deed this week?
- What can we learn from people who stay hopeful during hardship?
