Use the means and trust Allah

“True tawaktul is to use the means that Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala has provided for us while trusting that the results only belong to Him.”

The khateeb, at 20:33

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opening reminders: hadith on staying silent during the khutbah and seizing the opportunity of being alive
  2. Explanation of the name al-Hayy: the Ever-Living with no beginning, end, weakness, or death
  3. Explanation of al-Qayyum: the Self-Sustaining on whom every heartbeat and breath depends
  4. 'Rectify all my affairs' as comprehensive balance between dunya and akhirah (Rabbana atina, istikhara)
  5. 'Do not leave me to myself even for a blink of an eye', the blinking-eye illustration of constant dependence
  6. Second half: al-Hasan al-Basri's four foundations of tawakkul, closing promise to memorize the dua, and congregational dua
Try this week
Memorize and repeat the dua 'Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum bi rahmatika astaghith, aslih li sha'ni kullahu, wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata ayn' every morning and evening and whenever distress strikes
Recite the tasbih of Fatima (33/33/34) before sleeping
Prepare for death now through remembrance, prayer, charity, fulfilling others' rights, returning what is not yours, and repairing wrongs
Work and use available means (treatment, study, planning) while entrusting outcomes to Allah, without envy or fear of people
Remain conscious that Allah sees you in public and private, and stay shy before Him
Keep silent and attentive during the Friday khutbah
