Why Muslims must honor the Prophet's Companions
“We must love the companions, respect them, refrain from criticizing them, and teach others about their virtue and legacy.”
The khutbah argues that the Prophet Muhammad’s Companions hold a divinely honored, foundational status because they preserved and transmitted Islam, so Muslims must love, respect, emulate, and teach about them.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Establishes revelation and the Companions as authoritative transmitters of Islam.
- Defines the sahaba and presents Qur’anic and hadith evidence for their virtue.
- Highlights their sacrifices, precedence, and promised reward through examples from Badr and Hudaybiyyah.
- Warns against insulting or disparaging the Companions.
- Calls listeners to love, respect, emulate, and teach about the Companions, then concludes with supplication and prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“Follow their path And imitate their character As much as you can For they were on the straight path”
“Their loyalty Their sacrifice And the love for Allah And His messenger Cannot be matched Or emulated in any way”
“Remember after this khutbah We must love the companions Respect them Refrain from criticizing them And teach others About their virtue and legacy”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah focused on the companions of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and their honored place in Islam. The khateeb reminded us that they supported the Prophet and made great sacrifices to help carry the faith to others. He described their sincere hearts, deep knowledge, and humility as qualities we can learn from. He encouraged us to love and respect them, pray for them, and teach our children about their lives. As a family, we can learn their stories with gratitude and choose something from their character to practice together.
- What could you do this week to practice the humility the khateeb praised in the companions?
- Which companion would you like us to learn about together, and what would you like to discover?
- How can we show gratitude for the people who helped teach us our faith?
