The Quran should transform how we live
“We just read the Quran as though it comes to give us information.”
The Qur'an is meant not merely to inform believers but to transform their character, strengthen their inner lives, and empower them to improve themselves and their communities through sincere faith, learning, and collective work.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens with praise of Allah, the shahada, and the Qur'an as divine guidance.
- Explains Surah 17:9 as guidance toward the most upright path and personal transformation.
- Contrasts empowerment through knowledge, prayer, patience, and inner change with ignorance, fear, despair, and confusion.
- Connects Qur'anic empowerment to Black American community independence and Imam W. D. Mohammed's call for a unique identity.
- Uses biblical language and the story of Jesus and Mary to illustrate symbolic wisdom about the Word of God.
- Critiques social and religious corruption, then calls Muslims toward unity, service, and community responsibility.
- Closes by urging sincerity, work, cooperation, and continued worship.
In the khateeb's words
“You know, a lot of times we just read the Quran as though it comes to give us information. And it does. But that information is supposed to produce a transformation.”
“Allah, throughout the Quran, tells us, "Truth will prevail." So that means we need to have more patience.”
“If we're not ready to do none of those things, our condition are not going to change.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah focused on how the Quran can guide and empower us in everyday life. The khateeb reminded us that learning its words should lead to changes in our character and actions. He encouraged us to examine our habits, keep learning, and work together to improve our community. When the world feels troubling, he called us to have patience and trust that truth will prevail. He also urged us to carry our faith beyond Friday prayers through sincere work, helping others, and supporting the mosque.
- What is one thing you have learned from the Quran that you could put into practice this week?
- What habit would you like our family to improve together?
- How could we help someone in our mosque community before next Friday?
