A welcoming community helps people rebuild
“The community became the crutches with which they could lift themselves up.”
Allah calls believers to maintain loving reverence and regular remembrance, then embody Islam by building a compassionate community that welcomes, supports, and gently guides people.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Taqwa is loving fear of Allah and a commitment to die in faith.
- Daily prayer repeatedly reminds believers of their purpose and benefits them, not Allah.
- Islam honors people through protective commands such as avoiding alcohol.
- The Prophet’s community welcomed broken people and helped them rebuild through support.
- Stories of the Bedouin, Tufail ibn 'Amr, and a new Muslim show patient, soft correction.
In the khateeb's words
“We don't want to disappoint Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala protect us on yawm al-qiyamah to not let us disappoint Him.”
“the community became the crutches with which they could lift themselves up. Because there was a community. There was support. There was a network.”
“He said, go back to your village and speak to people with softness, with kindness.”
For the dinner table
Allah wants our fear of Him to be a loving fear: we obey because we do not want to disappoint the One who created and cares for us. The five daily prayers keep bringing us back to our purpose, which is to worship Allah, while the guidance of Islam benefits us. A healthy Muslim community welcomes people who arrive with mistakes, pain, or little support, and helps them grow. The Prophet modeled gentle correction, and the khateeb urged us not to become roadblocks to someone’s guidance. Our greetings, kindness, and good character may be the reason someone feels safe around Muslims or becomes interested in Islam.
- Who could you welcome or encourage at the masjid this week?
- What kind action could make someone curious about Islam?
- How can you correct a friend gently instead of embarrassing them?
