Your deeds determine your crossing of the Sirat
“Whoever preserves it, i.e. prayer, will have light and proof and salvation on the Day of Resurrection.”
Because every person will face the Sirat and their deeds determine their light, speed, and safety, believers should protect and perfect their prayer and hasten toward obedience.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines the Day of Judgment as a day of separation between disbelievers, believers, and hypocrites.
- Describes the Sirat as a dark, slippery bridge over Hellfire with hooks and claws.
- Explains that deeds determine each person's light, speed, injuries, and likelihood of crossing safely.
- Uses the fear of the early Muslims to prompt personal self-examination.
- Presents prayer as the source of light, proof, and salvation, with five levels of quality.
- Concludes that hastening toward obedience leads to faster passage and prays for safe crossing.
In the khateeb's words
“And he'll say, I did not slow you down. "Indeed it were your actions that slowed you down."”
“"Whoever preserves it, i.e. prayer, will have light and proof and salvation on the Day of Resurrection."”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us about the Sirat, the bridge over Hellfire that believers will have to cross on the way to Paradise. The khateeb explained that people’s light and their progress across it will reflect their deeds in this life. He especially encouraged us to protect our prayers and grow in attention, love, and devotion to Allah during salah. He described the effort to resist distractions in prayer as meaningful, and urged us to stop putting off good deeds. Alongside these serious reminders, he shared prayers for forgiveness and safety, reminding us to ask Allah to complete our light and bring us safely to Paradise.
- What could help you bring your attention back to Allah when your mind wanders during prayer?
- What good deed could we do together this week instead of putting it off?
- What would you like to ask Allah for after hearing this reminder?
