Treat your blessings as a trust

“Focus our desire on honoring and being thankful for what we already have.”

The khateeb, at 23:15

In one sentence

Because Allah’s will and justice are perfect, believers should accept what they currently possess as a trust, redirect desire and fear toward honoring it, and leave worldly outcomes to Allah while seeking His mercy.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Establishes Allah’s infinite perfection in will and justice, contrasting it with human notions of 100% perfection.
  2. Explains possession through ownership: what people have may belong to them, someone else, or no one.
  3. Explains deservance: present blessings are more likely gifts of mercy than things personally earned.
  4. Redirects desire from missing things toward gratitude and responsible care for existing blessings.
  5. Redirects fear from future loss toward avoiding misuse of current relationships, blessings, power, and responsibilities.
  6. Concludes by detaching from worldly outcomes, focusing on the Hereafter, and seeking Allah’s mercy.
Try this week
Focus desire on honoring and thanking Allah for current blessings.
Avoid treating hardship as automatically punitive or ease as automatically rewarding.
Fear misusing existing relationships, blessings, power, responsibilities, and privileges.
Seek forgiveness, focus on the Hereafter, and detach the heart from specific worldly outcomes.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah is the perfect Judge and that everything in our lives, people, possessions, opportunities, and hardships, comes under His will and wisdom. We may not receive everything we want, but what we have is a trust, not simply proof that we earned it. Instead of letting desire and fear fixate on what is missing or what might disappear, we can thank Allah for present blessings and care for them responsibly. Ease is not always a reward, and difficulty is not always a punishment; either can bring us closer to Allah. Our goal is to carry whatever is on our plate with humility, excellence, and hope for Allah’s mercy.
