Revelation comes from Allah alone
“The Wahy comes from Allah and the Prophet receives it and relays it.”
The khutbah teaches that revelation comes independently from Allah, while believers should prioritize sincere seekers of truth over those absorbed in worldly desires.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains Surah Abasa and the encounter with Ibn Umm Maktoum
- Clarifies prophetic protection and the legislative authority of the Prophet
- Argues that revelation is independent of the Prophet
- Uses the delayed revelation in the incident of al-Ifk as evidence
- Advises prioritizing sincere truth-seekers over people uninterested in guidance
- Contrasts pursuing the dunya with pursuing the akhirah
In the khateeb's words
“The Wahy comes from Allah and the Prophet receives it and relays it.”
“So if he was authoring it, maybe he wouldn't have mentioned some of these verses that appear critical”
“Don't waste your time on people who have no interest and listening to the truth.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reflected on the opening of Surat Abasa, when Ibn Umm Maktoum approached the Prophet with a question while he was speaking to the leaders of Quraysh. The khateeb explained that Allah was showing a better priority: giving attention to someone sincerely seeking guidance. He emphasized that, in his explanation, the Prophet had exercised judgment where there was no existing ruling, rather than done something wrong. He also explained that revelation comes from Allah and that the Prophet faithfully receives and shares it without controlling its timing or content. For our family, the khutbah invites us to make time for sincere questions and support people who want to learn, whether they are believers or non-believers.
- When has someone made you feel that your question mattered?
- How could we make more room for each other’s questions at home?
- What helps you listen when someone shows you a better way to do something?
