Use your strengths to serve the ummah
“Whatever it is that Allah has made easy for you.”
Allah gives each person distinct strengths and opportunities, and believers should turn them into worship by using them to uplift fellow Muslims and serve the ummah.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Shows how the Prophet recognized different companions’ strengths, contrasting Hassan ibn Thabit’s poetry with Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf’s business.
- Uses Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf’s generosity during Medina’s famine and Abu Bakr’s many acts of worship to illustrate varied forms of service.
- Calls listeners to use wealth, knowledge, and professional experience collectively to strengthen the ummah.
- Broadens worship beyond ritual through examples of helping animals, removing harm, greeting Muslim colleagues, and maintaining brotherly love.
- Closes by urging listeners to identify their blessings and use one practical ability to help others.
In the khateeb's words
“You are not doing it thinking that this is just what people do. But you are doing it understanding that through this I am going to earn the pleasure of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“So whatever it is that Allah has made easy for you. How can you use that to uplift the Ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?”
“That they thought about one another more than they thought about themselves. That they used their skills. They were good at different things. To uplift one another.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah has given each of us different strengths, and we can use them to help others. He described companions who served through poetry or through sharing their wealth, showing that everyone has something to contribute. When we support one another, our small efforts can grow into something much bigger. He also reminded us that worship reaches into everyday life: helping someone find an opportunity, caring for a thirsty animal, or removing something harmful from a path can be meaningful good deeds. As a family, we can look at what Allah has given us and choose one way to help someone this week, seeking His pleasure.
- What is something you enjoy or do well that could help someone else?
- What small act of kindness could make someone’s day easier tomorrow?
- Who could you greet or include this week, and how would you begin?
